ACHIEVEMENTS and Inventions In Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egypt is known for it's monumental pyramids and statues along with its inventions. A few of the inventions the Egyptians created can be found below. Many of the modern technology we use today is founded off the basis ingenuity of the Egyptian's inventions.
Believe it or not but, The first form of paper or paper like material was from the ancient Egyptians. They invented it as early as 3000 BCE. To make this early form of paper, they developed a technique using parts from the papyrus plant (Cyperus papyrus). The papyrus plant is cut into strips and layered over each other in patterns. It is the n soaked in water and pressed together for 21 days. The juice in the plant acted as a glue and stuck the pieces of it together. The paper is then dried and is now able to be used.
To add on to the invention of paper, the Egyptians also made the first pens. They did this by cutting reed straws, and then shaping different tips onto them. These pens were hard enough to be able to make indents on the papyrus. The pen does not use ink like we do today but pushes the papyrus which creates a mark in the paper.
A Pen and Paper are pointless unless you have something to write. The Egyptians formed a writing system called Hieroglyphic Script that first started in the form of pictures, called pictograms. In Egypt, the first known pictogram dates back to around 6000 BCE. These drawings represented drawings or symbols that indicated words. These were used to describe historical events, people, wars and culture.
Ancient Egyptians relied heavily on their agriculture and crops so they needed a way to keep track of the farming season. The ancient Egyptians established a solar calendar based off the position of the Earth compared to the Sun. This calendar consisted of twelve months, like we have today, and had 30 days plus 5 extra days at the end of the year. This calendar did not make up for the fraction of the day left over at the end of the year so the calendar’s official dates were wrong compared to the system we use today.
The most popular Egyptian achievement , are the pyramids. The pyramids were used as tombs for the Pharaohs that have died. The pharaohs that passed were put into the pyramids and were preserved to guide the living. The triangular shaped sides represent god as the creator, the preserver, and the transformer.
